I actually really enjoyed Suburbia. I think it is so funny that what was "cool" then in fashion, photography, food, decorations, etc., is now making a full comeback on the hipster radar. If anyone is familiar with the Arcade Fire's new album, it is kind of a similar theme. It is their commentary on modern suburbia and how it has taken us over and made us mindless consumers. Interesting how even our young culture has picked up on this overwhelming theme. While I don't necessarily agree that Suburban life is negative, I do see how one could blame a lot of the consumerist, selfish acts we tend to do now on the pleasantries that we enjoy, especially in areas like the Suburbs. Suburbia is creative because it captured something as it was happening, and made a prediction about it, based on what was going on. I doubt that the photographer came up with the idea all at once, but rather compiled the pictures more randomly, and found a common theme within them. I loved these.
The Electronic Media Gallery was a trip. I won't lie and say that i sat through all three movies, but I did sit through one and a half, which was more than enough for me. I did think that the one with the artist describing what he saw in his head while he pretty much had a seizure on camera was interesting, creative, and a good concept, but perhaps a little eccentric for my taste. I think the artist came up with it by perhaps studying some early psychological experiments. That time period was one of a great deal of breakthrough in the psychology field. The second one, Deserts, I actually kind of enjoyed. The juxtaposition of being in the ocean, and then in the slow motion room, was really interesting to me. Both seem to be... peaceful, however, I felt extreme anxiety when in the room, because of the music and the way my subconscious has been trained to EXPECT something unexpected to happen, when really, nothing ever did. I have not a clue how he came up with this idea, since I don't really think I understood it fully.
I love what you said about trends coming back. So true! I love that we can take what we want from all of the generations before us to make our own mixed style. I'll have to check out the new album :)
ReplyDeleteI also noticed that a lot of the fashions, hairstyles, home décor trends are now back in style. I especially loved all the shag carpeting!
ReplyDeleteGood comment about gathering the photos randomly and later finding the common trend. Probably true.
