So, I love the beach. But... I hate the ocean. It is freezing, sandy, treacherous, etc., and I, normally, want nothing to do with it. However, in contemplating myself recently, I have realized that I have a hard time doing things that I don't like. In other words, I am stubborn and can't just let go. So, for this assignment, I decided to let go. My family took a Labor Day trip to Huntington Beach, CA, and this is the location that I decided to go into the ocean fully clothed. I don't know if any of you have done that, but it is a freeing experience. It is hard to explain the sensation that overcomes you. First, you think "WOW, i am so stupid for doing this," followed by this rushing sensation of water surrounding you on all sides, then followed by your body freezing up so fast that you can scarcely breathe, but then, as you push forward, you pretty much lose all inhibition. It is awesome, to say the least, and a good metaphor to life, I might add.
Oh, and I have always wanted to make a stop-motion video, so I thought I would tie that in as well.
So, things I learned.
1. It's good sometimes to let yourself go.
2. Once the hardest part is over, the rest is worth it.
3. Being prepared (with a towel, or a deadline, whatever it may be) will save you.
4. Conquering your fear (or something you hate) will free you.
5. You might actually enjoy something you thought you didn't like.
That is pretty brave! Even though it was cold, you probably will never forget this beach experience!
ReplyDeleteThat's great! I love the ocean, but you're definitely right about the freezing part.
ReplyDeleteIt is fun to swim in the ocean, Especially with clothes on...or off. Either way I wish I would have done that to get out of my rut.
ReplyDeleteMy family lived near Santa Cruz and I almost NEVER went in the water without my longie wet suit! You're crazy girl!
ReplyDeleteSounds fun and reminds me of those cool "trash your dress" wedding shows. They usually do things like take photos of a girl dressed in her wedding dress in the ocean or something -EliseM
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you--cold water sucks big time. My showers are always like scalding temperature just to avoid such terribleness.
