I just recently discovered Olan Rogers on YouTube. He is HILARIOUS! And this isn't even one if his funniest videos.  I am pretty sure his most quotable video is Lions Blaze . Check out his channel. It is like the best!

Finding New Music 

I love finding new music. And when I do, it gets stuck in my head for a few days. There's nothing quite like one song on repeat for a whole day. It turns into a theme song.

Abstraction of Trees

I had lots of fun making this piece. This semester I am in a 2D design class and I am constantly doing color theory, so it was a nice change to actually create something on a larger scale. It is a 30x22 piece of stonehenge sheet that i have created an abstraction of trees on. I used micron pens then added water to create the trees.

The sun lit up the buildings
As she spoke of escape

From this creative exercise I learned that I have a lot of pent up emotion from events in my life that are "over and done with". But I think that there is a benefit that comes from taking time to go over the past. You tend to realize what you learned, how you have changed, and where you are currently because of it. This song however was not based on my experience with other people, but with my experience reading the book Paper Towns by John Green. The book character Margo Roth Spiegelman is the girl in this song.
There is also a strong difference from poetry writing, or some other way I would normally write.  Because I am not just rhyming, or matching syllables. It is close to poetry but still different enough that I found this exercise difficult. What helped me was to actually play some music that didn't have lyrics, not necessarily classical, but more along the lines of Maybeshewill

Never Let the Ladle Drop in the Soup Again

 
This is genius. Because we all hate loosing the spoon or ladle in our pot of soup.  Plus it seems like such an elegant solution. Don't want your spoon to fall in? Add an air bubble in the handle that keeps it afloat. It reminds me of a buoy. I wonder if that is where he got the inspiration?

Moleskine Inspiration

All of these ads we have been doing has inspired me to look at what people do with their moleskine notebooks. People are so creative and so inspired. These are a few of the plethora of drawings/illustrations I found in my endeavor:

I want to learn how to draw. Perhaps I shall get my own moleskine and learn to draw

 

Rut Exercise #4

Mission Discover New Foods!

To break out of this weekends rut I took this mission to the extreme. I did a whole day of new things.
I started with lunch. I grabbed a person that was in my ward, Steven Balintine (not only because he has a car, but because he is the most happy go lucky person I know) so we started off to Payson. In the search for a hole in a wall place to eat our adventurous meal. We ended in a po dunk family run diner "Nebo Kitchen". It was not good food. Like homemade dinner from the freezer and boxed potatoes. But it was a fun adventure.

From there we went to the store. I am on the hunt for the perfect chocolate chip cookie, so it was time to make a new batch with a new recipe this week. (If you have the worlds best recipe let me know so I can try them) This time it was a recipe off the back of the Hershey's Semi-sweet chips. They were average. The chocolate was fantastic though.

Then, since I did not feel satisfied with either of these food adventures, we went to Guru's for dinner. The spicy curry was sub par, too spicy and not savory enough. It lacked depth and flavor other than spice. The sweet potato fries were fantastic when they were hot, the fry sauce was fantastic, but let them cool down and they were average.

So overall the food adventures were about a 5 out of 10. Nothing to call home about. But this food adventure day was an inspiration for future food adventure. This Rut was BUSTED! And it will set a pattern for future ruts being demolished.

Who doesn't want a dragon?

This is a wonderful creation just makes me happy. Plus look how happy it makes that little kid! There is something that is so awesome about being able to use your imagination and play pretend dragon riders.

The Worlds Smallest Graffiti  

I have recently found myself finding some awesome street art. This is work by a street artist known as Slinkachu and is titled Inner City Snail. "One was given a graffiti-style urban revamp inclusive of a new name – titled John. Another had the Tube logo painted on its shell complete with a couple of unexpected passengers."

Slinkachu also did another project called "Little People" which is worth checking out!

I have been looking at making myself a cool business card, and this site has a bazillion inspirations for any type of business card. This amazing and cool translucent business card made in the style of a camera for a photographer.

Rut Exercise #2

Happy Birthday Flash Mob

For my this weeks, "do that one thing you have never done but you have always wanted to do" assignment, I decided to do a flash mob. A happy birthday flash mob. The idea of creating a commotion, making someone supper embarrassed, and making someone feel special was the whole goal.

So this is how it worked:

• Scout out location for unsuspecting birthday celebrator
• Have friend #1 sit and start a conversation
• Friend #1 asks their name
• Friend #1 texts me their name

Meanwhile

• Friend #2 finds location to set up camera
• Friend #2 films the whole ordeal

Meanwhile

• I join another group of people
• Convince them its my friends birthday 
• Ask them if they will join in me singing happy birthday
• I get up and make my way over to unsuspecting birthday celebrator

Now its party time.

Cue the Confetti, Ukelele , Kazoo and Cupcakes!

Finding #1

Measuring the Universe

This is an art piece that was done at Tate, St Ives by Roman Ondak. What started as an empty white room has turned into a contribution of over 90,000 black marks that represent the height of each person who visits.

 

 What I find interesting and compelling about this piece is not only the interaction and the contribution of each person, but how taking something as simple as a person's height and turning into something bigger. This piece shows how we all contribute, how we size up to others, how we all have something in common, and how similar or different we can all be as humans. I like that it takes the participation of other people to be a successful art installation. Without the many people measuring and writing on the wall, there would be no art. I think it shows how there is no art without people. I can imagine going into this exhibit as a single person, and how you would need to make a friend to help you measure yourself. This again shows how this piece can also be about working together, there would be no art without the contribution of the over 90,000 people who helped by simply measuring their height on the wall.  Yet, like Martin Park said in his interview, "At the end of the show everything will be painted over and everything will be gone but it will have had this life for this period and before that period will have been a very dynamic growing, living artwork. "

Rut Exercise #1

 We Could Be Heroes

What struck me out of the whole exhibit as creative was how the artists took something that was so childish, their love of action figures and heroes, and turn it into something that was more than the simple character of Superman or Batman. Most of the artist took the approach of putting a spin on their childhood favorites, or being inspired by the youth of action heroes, but one piece did the opposite. I will shoot myself in the foot for not being able to remember the artist or the name of the painting (but I could tell you exactly where it is in the exhibit!), however this piece was particularly interesting to me because it showed a group of older (elderly) people playing cards, all dressed as super heroes. I think that it showed particular creativity because it illustrated how even when we are all grown up, we still want to be heroes, or that maybe these old people used to run around as heroes and now just play card games but they could be heroes to someone. I would imagine that the artist came up with this idea by looking at who our heroes should be. Our grandparents should be super heroes to us. And they used to want to be super heroes, so we should treat them as such. Even if its not int he conventional way of idolizing Superman or Batman, but it should be with respect, awe even. Because there are everyday super heroes all around us. And some of them are our just playing card games waiting to be asked to share their adventures of saving the world.
