This is an art piece that was done at Tate, St Ives by Roman Ondak. What started as an empty white room has turned into a contribution of over 90,000 black marks that represent the height of each person who visits.
What I find interesting and compelling about this piece is not only the interaction and the contribution of each person, but how taking something as simple as a person's height and turning into something bigger. This piece shows how we all contribute, how we size up to others, how we all have something in common, and how similar or different we can all be as humans. I like that it takes the participation of other people to be a successful art installation. Without the many people measuring and writing on the wall, there would be no art. I think it shows how there is no art without people. I can imagine going into this exhibit as a single person, and how you would need to make a friend to help you measure yourself. This again shows how this piece can also be about working together, there would be no art without the contribution of the over 90,000 people who helped by simply measuring their height on the wall. Yet, like Martin Park said in his interview, "At the end of the show everything will be painted over and
everything will be gone but it will have had this life for this period
and before that period will have been a very dynamic growing,
living artwork. "
It's interesting to see how there's a huge block of the average height.
ReplyDeleteThis is so sick. Are they continuing to add to it today? And is it just adults or kids too?
ReplyDeleteThis is so cool. I like how it becomes a piece that involves the people who visit it. Everyone contributes to make it what it is.
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing! I think its is awesome how the end result is unknown....super creative!
ReplyDeleteThis is really awesome. I think the reason I like it so much, is because the art is always changing, and that some of the art itself is in the change that is occurring.
ReplyDeleteWow! This is so cool! What a creative idea!
ReplyDeleteChanelC mentions that the piece wouldn't have worked without everyone's contribution. Imagining one lone name on the wall really impressed upon me the necessity that participation plays in this piece. Very cool.
ReplyDeleteI think I'll have a room like this in my house..yep I believe so.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE art that is created by the audience. I think that breaking that wall between artist and viewer is a tactic through which amazing things can be accomplished. This is a great example of art and design that can be achieved through amazing simplicity and every-day life of anyone.
ReplyDeleteThis is the coolest find it! I love the concept though its a little sad to think im probably shorter than the shortest mark up there! haha
