This weekend for the rut activity, I did something new in association with something I already have done and love to do. I'm in a band with some friends, and this Saturday we were the opening band for a show at Velour. Even though I've been playing music for quite some time, for this show we decided to do something we had never done before: try selling some of our music. Another thing to keep in mind is that we had also never tried making higher-quality recordings of our music before either - the only recordings we had ever made were living-room demos. So Tuesday through Thursday we recorded like crazy using more legitimate recording equipment, and then I spent most of Friday mixing and editing. Friday night we burned cds and packaged them using lunch bags.
The show on Saturday was super fun, and we ended up making close to $50 off of our share of ticket sales plus sales from cds we sold. It was a really fun experience, and even though we didn't sell tons of cds or make lots of money, it was really gratifying to see that people besides just our friends that came to the show appreciated our music and work enough to listen to us and buy our cds we had made. It was a really great experience. I learned that even with a short deadline it is still possible to get good creative work done.
That is awesome that you got to be perform a show in your band!!! I've always wanted to be in a band and do that!!!
ReplyDeleteRecording is quite the process I have heard...way to go getting that all done in just a few short days! And I like the idea of lunch bags for packaging.
ReplyDeleteThat is exciting! You should play a sample for the class.
ReplyDeleteSometimes the short deadlines produce the best work. Having to be on your best creative behavior and to just crack everything out. Great idea to use lunch bags! And post when your next concert is I will totally go!
