Rut #5
The sun lit up the buildings
As she spoke of escape
Leaving this place
and all of its hate
I have never seen her eyes so bright
On that building looking down alight
With the thought that the world is all fake
A mask of happiness breaks
And we all wear masks
In these paper towns
Living our lives
For other people
It danced in her eyes that light
A passion that can't be blown out
I watched the world burn
The buildings fall apart
A new light was coming
as dawn was approaching
I will miss her when she is gone
I missed her when she was here
And we all wear masks
In these paper towns
Living our lives
For other people
From this creative exercise I learned that I have a lot of pent up emotion from events in my life that are "over and done with". But I think that there is a benefit that comes from taking time to go over the past. You tend to realize what you learned, how you have changed, and where you are currently because of it. This song however was not based on my experience with other people, but with my experience reading the book Paper Towns by John Green. The book character Margo Roth Spiegelman is the girl in this song.
There is also a strong difference from poetry writing, or some other way I would normally write. Because I am not just rhyming, or matching syllables. It is close to poetry but still different enough that I found this exercise difficult. What helped me was to actually play some music that didn't have lyrics, not necessarily classical, but more along the lines of Maybeshewill

Love those lines!!
I like that you were able to create something like this from something that you weren't necessarily personally connected to.
ReplyDeleteI love reading but have never heard of that book before. I'll add it to my list! I like that you were inspired by a book you read.
