"Where would people never notice a town full of robots?... Connecticut!"

(Quote from The Stepford Wives)

Suburbia was fascinating to me.  Bill Owens took everyday moments and people to show us the consumerism in America.   I found myself drawn into these simple black and white photos, perhaps because, having grown up in the suburbs, it was like seeing my neighbors 30-40 years ago.  Or seeing my own future?  Anyways, I thought it was so cool to have this look back in time, especially thinking about it in context.  These were the children of Depression and World War veterans.  These people had grown up during the 50s, desegregation, Vietnam War, etc.  They found their happiness now, perhaps because of the years of turmoil and social change before them, in simple stuff- in being able to throw a party, have a car, get toys, etc.  These feelings of consumerism and materialism still exist today, despite our own regression, and are what give us jobs as advertisers.

The electronic media gallery was... interesting.  Thinking about it, though, art is the transference of ideas and emotions from the artist to the viewer, so while it was very different from a traditional exhibit, I think it accomplishes the same goal.  And it's something that I think is important for us as advertisers to see- our field is pushing the boundaries.  We need to integrate technology with creativity.  I'm not saying we should do it in the same way, but this exhibit was thought-provoking.  And isn't that why you go to a museum?

  1. I hadn't thought about it in this way but with the EMG, there was defiantly a "transference of ideas and emotions from the artist to the viewer." Although some of the ideas were abstract and different, there was definitely emotion coming through the screen.

  3. I didn't think about the context of the people's lives... growing up in the depression and all. That's a good insight.

  5. I think it's interesting that you talked about these people portrayed being WW2 Veterans and that they reached their goals. Interesting point.
