Finding #4- Brooke Holt

I love packaging. And this is great clever packaging.

Find It #4: Kim Pratt

I think this is so funny! If you can't read it, the ad is for Bose noise canceling headphones. Awesome.

Steven Stucki - Find it #4

Just funny. And weird. It's a norwegian ad for fixed gears. Probably more weird than funny. steven

Steven Stucki - RUT#4

I decided to try Unagi by itself. Unagi is raw eel. I've always mildly enjoyed sushi, but I'm definitely not mad for it, and I especially don't like plain raw fish. I've never enjoyed the earthy, fishy taste of fish. I decided however to try a few strips of Unagi by itself and it wasn't half bad. It doesn't have a super fishy taste and if you can get past the chewy, stretchy texture of the meat than you're well on your way to becoming an avid eel eater. I haven't changed in any way after this assignment, but I was reminded that you might think you ABSOLUTELY know something (that eel would definitely be fishy) and find out that you were completely wrong and had been missing out on a yummy delicacy to add to your food inventory. steven

I really like this image.  It's an interesting and humorous way of portraying cramped conditions.

I love the way this one just keeps getting deeper and deeper.

Find It #4 -- Brittan Weber

These first two are for Sprint. The yellow says "where we come in."

These are for a visual arts school. Creative alternative ads!

Rut #4 - Brittany Funk

I went to get Vietnamese food the other day and decided to try something called pork vermicelli. Honestly, this assignment was really easy for me, I LOVE trying new food. It is like my hobby. I lived in Asia the first half of my life and my mom is Korean so I have tried some pretty weird stuff (one time we went to China and they killed a snake at our table, served us the blood, and then cooked the snake for our meal...crazy!). I love Asian food, and this dish was no exception. I recommend it to you all! I don't really feel like I changed in any way from this experience, but it was fun nonetheless! What I need to do is go to a restaurant that has one of my favorite dishes and not order it...that might be kind of hard for me...

Oh McDonalds. Trying to sell itself as "healthy" with a veggieburger ad.

Creative yes, but I wonder how well they sell them.... wherever they sell them.

I love well done word play and I think this is a great example. Also, parallel parking is a tragedy.

Fing it #4 - Jacqueline Usterud

I find this Johnson-Johnson ad is funny and creative because of it simplicity and humor. However, because of what we have talked about in class I feel as though the copy gives the ad away fairly quick. It doesn't make you think as much. It is still funny to think about dinosaurs roaming at the back of your mouth because you have not reached there or brushed thoroughly for a while.

I have always loved this ad campaign by Dove!

This new video by The Lonely Island is kinda funny and not too over-the-top inappropriate for BYU.  The thing that works for it is that it is basically taking the whole idea of YOLO (party and get crunk and stuff) and turning it on its head, basically to a total opposite of what the general idea of YOLO is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5Otla5157c

I don't know if any of you have seen this but it's going viral in the wink of an eye or the snap of a finger.  This kids rocks my socks off and I say it's an ad to help the world be better.  It makes me feel creative after I watch it and it makes me want a CRAY CRAY black child like this little man.

RUT 3 - Steven Stucki - Las Acacias

-Steven Stucki

Rut 3 Las Acacias - Ashley Boehme

I love how "Las Acacias" never catered to its audience.  The director picked a story and told it.  He only included the details that were needed, and because of this, there was always something to wonder about.  There is so much silence in this film, you're riveted to the characters, trying to guess what they're thinking about.  Very little happens, so you pay special attention to little details.  The movie ends with you feeling like there's still stuff you don't know.  That's pretty interesting.

The subtle changes in Ruben and Jacinta's relationship are also fascinating.  For instance, he becomes a lot more accommodating as the trip advances.  Instead of just leaning over the truck seat to open the door for Jacinta, Ruben eventually starts holding the baby for her as she gets in.

There's a lot you can say about the film, but I'll just end by saying that I felt convinced that this could happen in real life.  I really respected the actors for their performances.  This has got to be one of the most tedious, awkward films to act in, and yet I felt totally absorbed by the reality of this story.

"Las Acacias" was a boring way to spend an hour and a half, but I really treasure the experience, despite its weirdness

Rut 3 Evan Coles

The movie was something that's for sure. It really left a lot of open ended questions. Like why was she crying? What exactly happened? Who is Fernando? Whats up with his son? But I guess all of that would take away from the main goal of teaching people the importance of modern day technology. If it was not for auxiliary chords, iPads, and iPhones we also would be having extremely long and boring car rides as well. Blessed is Steve Jobs for creating devices for us that kill the awkwardness of life.

Another top experience gained. I discovered a place for a cheap date while at the same time being viewed as cultured cause we're going to an international film. Nice.

Well how neat is that?

That's pretty neat.

Rut #3 - Brooke Holt

Please excuse my terrible photoshopping of the truck... still learning. Anyways, after watching the movie I still didn't know what the title meant. So I looked it up and learned that acacias is a thorntree. This added so much more to the movie for me. How the man seemed to have his thorns at first, but through the journey he softed up. Plus, although he didn't open up too much, the small facts I did know made me totally was root for him at the end. No pun intended. Trees take time to take root and grow. Give it time.

Rut #3 - Austen Allred

I liked the idea of using the road as a piece of symbolism in the poster. It separates them, but because of the perspective the further down the road you look the closer the people who are on it would appear. I also wanted to turn it into an "A" in "Las," but that ended up looking trashy.

In retrospect I probably wouldn't have posterized these images quite as much as I did. I also didn't include any of the awards, actors or actresses, etc. that I probably should have (as I now realize by looking at all of yours).

Rut #3- Brittan Weber

I really enjoyed the simplicity and reality portrayed in the film. It felt like I was there driving in the truck, feeling awkward at some moments and so good during others. The simplicity of the film evokes so much emotion. I am really glad I heard about it from this class and was able to see it. From now on I would like to view more films in the International Cinema and from other sources!

Rut Exercise #3 "Las Acacias Poster"

I enjoyed this film immensely! I thought that it did a great job at pulling at our heart strings with their "smaller than life" characters. They weren't super special, more like normal people with normal problems and the fact that we could relate and be emotionally involved in this small story was a huge feat. I also liked that it was in spanish (because I could understand it) and see the Argentine and Paraguayan culture in the film as well.

After seeing the film I went on to read more about it. When tasked with the assignment of doing a poster I noticed that the one the company had made included the "orange colored silhouette" design. I thought it looked great, but at the same time wanted to stay far away from that art style.

I thought about the film more and really loved that they used the "mate" drink (In Argentina that is a very common drink that the people love). They showed Ruben and Jacinta drinking it several times and I wanted to incorporate it somehow. I thought that the symbolism behind it could be that of, "friendship, getting to know one another, and trust." These were themes that I thought this film was about, getting past personal hesitancies and opening up to someone. I also wanted to add red and blue into the mix (omit the "truck-colored orange theme") and put in the Paraguay and Argentina flag (the relationship with our two characters I think are also symbolized by the two countries). What I got was something different.

Also in my mind, they DEFINITELY get married and have probably 8 more kids because Ruben secretly loves them :)

*Ideally this would not have the black border, but to make the poster look more postery it was required.

April Baker Rut #3

My experience with Las Acacias aka "How a middle aged man gets a date" was pretty neutral. I agree that it was pretty slow, but I feel like I've seen enough foreign films that I wasn't particularly bothered by it. The simple story didn't really leave me with much either. I think that the idea behind the slower pace is that it's supposed to reflect a realistic amount of time, but I think that I agree with other people and I would have enjoyed it more as a 15 minute short or something. I think that it would of had more of an emotional impact that way and the lack of talking would have really worked to its advantage. Similar to that montage in Up. As it was though I thought it was alright. Something that I would be willing to see again but probably wouldn't seek out.

Quin Rut3 LasAcacias

I thought this movie was very well done. It created such a unique experience for the viewer. The pace was not what we are used to seeing and definitely took some adjusting for me. But once I realized that the whole movie was going to be that slow, I found myself really engaged with the movie. I found that I was constantly speculating about his past and her past and all these questions that centered around the characters.

Rut 3: Las Acacias - Mckay Robertson

so before i watched this show and i was very interested to see what i would think of it.  i like movies that make me think and i like independent films so i was excited to see how this one turned out.  despite the fact that i dont speak spanish and i almost fell asleep a couple times (spanish is such a soothing language!) i really enjoyed the film.  i noticed a few people complained about how they could have made this film 15 minutes long and said the same thing and i disagree with that.  first of all, i think everyone can agree that the ending makes the movie what it is.  i loved seeing the guy finally come out of his shell and show some emotion, but i think the reason i loved it so much is because for so long he frustrated me with his lack of emotion.  i loved seeing him change an begin to care for the mother and child he was driving.  i started measuring his level of interest by how he treated them and their luggage getting in and out of the truck.  at first he didnt even move out of his seat to help them, but gradually he started opening the door, carrying the luggage, holding the baby, etc...  those subtle little touches leading up to the ultimate climax was what really got me going during this show.

Finding #4 - Brittany Funk

LOVE this series of videos from Nike. This one is my favorite, but they are all really good. I think it is a unique way to talk about and sell the shoe without actually talking too much about its features. The fact that they were able to get so many celebrities and professional athletes helped this be successful as well. Sorry to anyone who is a Kobe/Lakers hater!

Rut #3 - Brittany Funk

I really enjoyed this film for its simplicity. I have seen a couple other Latin American films and they were very similar to Las Acacias; not a lot of conversation and simple story line. The other films were also filmed in a way that made you feel like you were right there in the story. When watching Las Acacias, I found myself kind of making up what I thought the characters were thinking/would be saying because of the lack of dialogue. I think this allowed me to become more invested in the movie and connect more with the characters. I probably would have never gone to see this film if it weren't for this assignment, but I am so glad I did. I wanted to reflect the simplicity of the movie in the poster. I selected two pictures, each with a different character in the foreground. I think it kind of symbolizes how both characters developed feelings throughout the story, and even thought they didn't express them until the end, we as the audience could see little signs of the developing relationship.

Rut 3 Las Acacias - Kevin Johnson

I thought Las Acacias was a very interesting film just because it was so different from the typical American movie.  If this had been an American movie, the main characters would have probably encountered some crazy adventures/obstacles, and had a more intimate romantic connection.  But in this film, we are presented with a story that (at least to me) feels like something that could actually happen. Nothing particularly out of the ordinary happens, which can seem boring, but at the same time makes the movie seem more like a snapshot of real life. There were times during the film where it almost felt more like a documentary than a regular movie to me.  I thought the lack of music and minimal dialogue also played a big role in differentiating this movie from traditional american films.  It was a very interesting and different viewing experience.

For my poster I wanted images that showed the main characters of the movie, as well as the truck, as their gradually changing relationship during their extended journey is the main focus of the film.  I did not originally plan to have my poster be black and white, but when I put the files into photoshop, for some reason it made them black and white, which I thought ended up being a cool look and makes the poster look more cohesive.

Rut #3-Darby Miller

Las Acacias was an interesting and actually amazing film. After 10 minutes I was thinking, "If they keep driving for 10 more minutes without saying something I am leaving!" But then after 10 minutes I was so sucked in by the fact that the movie could indeed be just driving I had to stay to see if anything actually happened! When he finally asked her out I cheered and clapped I was so happy! It is amazing how a seemingly boring film with the simple twist of a guy asking a girl out can be a masterpiece of an ending and then I can go watch an epic movie that has a complex ending and not be nearly as satisfied as I was when this guy got the courage to ask the women out! haha! Hopefully that made sense.

Rut #3 Las Acacias- Kim Pratt

I had an interesting experience while watching this film, part of me loved it and part of me was completely bored out of my mind! I loved the cinematography and feeling that the movie portrayed, but it was drawn out for far too long. A few minutes of this movie would have been great, but 90 minutes was too long. The storyline was short and sweet but once again was drawn out for too long. It was hard for me to handle the silence of the film. I felt like it gave the whole film some sort dark feeling for me and also came off being a bit mysterious. The ad that I designed tried to capture that dark feeling, while incorporating the mysterious aspects of the film. I also tried to incorporate the color scheme used in the real movie poster.

Rut #3-Michelle Monson

My experience watching a foreign film was unusual.  I don't understand Spanish at all and I just went to the eye doctor and I have an eye infection, so I left the movie with a huge headache from reading the subtitles.  I liked the ending but I thought that the whole movie could've been portrayed in like 15 minutes rather than 85 minutes.  I thought that this film would've been better as a Pixar animation film because it would've been short, sweet, and simple.  However, I did get very nostalgic as I've been to Mexico and Nicaragua, Cozumel, Cuba, etc.  It reminded me of the food I ate at those places, the people, the culture, etc.  I think American films rely so much on action and on script and in this movie, though the silence was hard to get used to at the start, it was very relaxing to me that the director took the time to help the audience see the budding of a beautiful friendship; though this still doesn't hinder my thinking of the film should've been 15 minutes.

Rut #3

I watched Phantom Pain, and without giving too much away, it;s about an avid cyclist who lives for cycling.  He travels the world cycling up mountains and always challenging himself.  This love of cycling has sometimes gotten in the way of his personal life and relationships.  After a hit and run accident he is left with one leg, and this loss of cycling in his life pushes him to dark places where he must find who he is and who he wants to be.  The reason i did the poster the way i did, is because  all though the "phantom pain" references are about his missing leg, in reality they are about his loss of cycling and the trouble he has moving on from that.  in this poster it shows the phantoms of his  old bikes, but in reality all that is left is his mangled bicycle that can no longer be ridden.

Rut #3 Las Acacias - Jacqueline Usterud

This movie was intriguing to me. I found that even though there was barely any dialogue going on over the course of a 90 minute long movie, I was glued to the screen. The simple cinematography and the script made the movie more relatable to me. I did watch the movie with english subtitles online, but could still decipher some spanish from what I learned in sixth/seventh grade. I noticed that there was not a lot of focus on fancy milieu, editing, make-up and action pieces, but that the movie was filmed out of a fairly natural point of view The movie seemed real to me, as if it was filmed from one persons view of the travelling people. I enjoyed the side-mirror shots, and the "over the shoulder" looks from the travelers which displayed their interaction with each other and the landscape they left behind. The mirrors to me signified the meaning of leaving something rough and unspoken behind to start anew. This is something I do not see often in American Movies. It was a nice change to have little dialogue, no soundtrack or music, A LOT OF SILENCE, little cinematography and little action happen in a movie, and still being able to get so much out of it.

My poster therefore displays these feelings I got from the movie.

The Worlds Smallest Graffiti

I have recently found myself finding some awesome street art. This is work by a street artist known as Slinkachu and is titled Inner City Snail. "One was given a graffiti-style urban revamp inclusive of a new name – titled John. Another had the Tube logo painted on its shell complete with a couple of unexpected passengers."

Slinkachu also did another project called "Little People" which is worth checking out!

Truth in advertising...a friend sent this to me but I think it originates from the site "Slacktory." Thought it was funny and relevant to many young college students.
