Found Lyrics - Allie Sullivan

In high school we learned about found poetry which, since I'm terrible at poetry, is my favorite kind to do. So I did some found poetry for my song lyrics. I went back through all of the webpages I visited in a day and pulled snippets from video titles, people's comments, articles, etc and put my favorites together into this song. The title is found as well. If you squint real hard it sort of makes sense in a fantastic abstract poetry kind of way.

The Bane of a Ballet Dancer’s Existence
By the Internet

I know you’re not a fan of
this spoiler-scared country.
They already had their minds made up,
Nothing new or unusual.

A steady rain of the worst advice
comes with such an emphatic no.

How close do you shoot at me and miss?

It seems more difficult to remember

the simplicity of a realistic happiness.

What did you learn from this creative exercise?

I like writing but I hate writing poetry/lyrics. I had to do some problem solving to find a way to make this something I would enjoy doing.

I'm a dance minor and in creating dances you sometimes have a clear idea of what it is you want to express but other times its totally fine to have no clue. You just create and afterward you look back and discover what the piece is about. I was reminded more of that creative process when doing this found lyrics version of the assignment. I liked that I didn't have any clear idea of what the song was going to be about. I just created it and now, its meaning is very open to anybody's personal interpretation and I like that.

What creative muscles were most used?

This mostly involved problem solving creativity. I had to figure out how I wanted to arrange my collage of words so that they would become meaningful and poetic.

  1. I think this was a very creative way to create a song. I think it can make for a song that is actually very reflective of the writer. Way to be a problem solver!

  2. I've never heard of found poetry but now I'm intrigued. Throw in a chorus and you've got the makings of an actually really good song.

  3. That is so cool that you found all this. Humans must just be natural poets at heart. Good work to make this challenge your own!
