Rut #4-Allie Rae Treharne

I grew up in Tokyo and have spent my life traveling. I therefore sometimes make the mistake of thinking that I have tried nearly every genre of cuisine and that I am already well-versed in the foods of many different cultures. I also frequent every international restaurant I know of in Provo, so I assumed this assignment wouldn't be as easy for me.

Not so!

This weekend I was staying in California for two days with my boyfriend at his parent's house. My boyfriend is from Brazil, and I've been starting to realize that despite my "vast" knowledge of Asia, I know comparatively nothing about the countries in South America and their foods. So, when his mom asked us what we wanted for dinner, I remembered this assignment and asked if we could make a Brazilian dish. I realized that I had only ever had one Brazilian dish before, which was also with his family!

I hope I still get credit for this assignment if I cooked the food with Brazilians instead of ordering it at a restaurant. It WAS my idea. :)

At any rate, we made Panqueca de Frango, or Brazilian Pancakes.

It's a really simple dish, it's just a shredded chicken mixture wrapped in crepes and topped with tomato creme sauce. It wasn't exceedingly exotic or daring--but it was delicious and something I've never had before! This assignment has inspired me to set a goal of mine to learn how to cook and learn about an even wider range of foods, esp. Brazilian and other South American cuisines.

(I forgot to take a picture of our delicious creation but above is a google image of the meal.)

  1. Panqueca de frango is so good! Though on my mission it was usually served with more of a white sauce. Also, I lived in Tokyo (like a block away from the temple) for two years as a little kid. Small world!

  3. I know what you mean about thinking that you've tried pretty much everything. It just means you need to branch out more!

  4. That's way cool that he cooked it for you! That's pretty legit. I should get a boyfriend from another country so I can try authentic food ;) Sounds yummy!
