April Baker Rut #4

I love trying new foods as well so this was a fun rut for me to do! I had some authentic Chinese food that I don't remember what it's called right now but I'll be sure to ask my roommate later so I can get it again. When I told my roommate about my assignment, she suggested that we get Chinese food, since she had served her mission in Taiwan. At first I kind of scoffed at the idea since I've been to get Chinese food probably hundreds of times in my life. My dad also used to live in Japan and there are a large number of Vietnamese and Filipino restaurants in my hometown. When we got to the restaurant though, and my roommate started talking away to the waitress in Mandarin, who then pulled out a secret authentic menu, I was sufficiently humbled. I pretty much just sat there dumbfounded until the food showed up. I enjoyed all of it, but some was better than others, I wish now though that I could remember what it was called. It definitely was different from Americanized Chinese food, and I could see similarities between it and the Asian cuisine I had already had the chance to experience, but at the same time it had it's own very unique flavors. All in all I would call it a great success!

  1. This secret authentic menu is so cool, it's like something out of a movie or tv show. Plus it's probably a lot more authentic chinese than what is on the regular menu.

  2. The fact that a secret authentic menu exists is really the coolest thing ever. I need to find someone who speaks mandarin to take me there!

  3. Whabam! SECRET MENU. Haha, I love that story. It's nice to know someone with an *in.* This one time, my family went to Dim Sum in Salt Lake with my brother's Chinese girlfriend. It was a little intimidating cuz we were basically the only white people there. The waitress went around with a food cart, and Jade picked stuff out for us, because we had no idea what anything was. It was a really cool experience. I should have my boyfriend take me to Dim Sum sometime, cuz he speaks Mandarin.
