Rut 5 -- Elise Meservy

Unknown

Who said it's Colonel Mustard in the kitchen with the wrench?
Who declared navy blue as not matching with black?
Who ordered sweating as unsocial while saying Obesity isn't either?
Who utters
Who decides a chocolate is simply a savory candy?

It's all unknown to me.
Time can only tell.
But then we'll see,
Time can only tell.

What's on the backside of an eclipse?
And what's above a floating hot air balloon?
What's growing on top the Ocean's Algae?
What's within the sparks of a crackling fire?
What's after a flickering street light finally dims?

It's all unknown to me.
Time can only tell.
But then we'll see,
Time can only tell.

Where does the end of our drain pipe lead?
And where does you chalk mural leave me?
Where's that Google search sending she?
Where do the roots of a weeping willow grow?
And where do a songbird's tunes go?

It's all unknown to me.
Time can only tell.
But then we'll see,
Time can only tell.

What comes at the end of each movie's credits?
What's written in the pages of that book you bought me?
What happens after you finally harvest your garden?
What's within that diploma I'm holding in my hands?
And what's decided in those candles I'm blowing out?

It's all unknown to me.
Time can only tell.
But then we'll see,
Time can only tell.

How many licks does it take to get to the center of a lollipop?
And how does a mailman get his mail?
How come wrinkles are viewed as ugly?
How can your shadow leave without a trace?
And how do you know when to end a song...

It's all unknown to me.
Time can only tell.
But then we'll see,
Time can only tell.

That was a REAL rut for me! I have always thought about how cool it would be to write a song, but I have never actually tried it because my songs always turn out WAY too cheesy...as this one did.

I did not want to rhyme my song for that exact reason. Not all songs rhyme and if they do it is because 1. they are meant to be cheesy like a parody or 2. they are very subtle and so it works. So, I tried not to make mine rhyme but now it seems kind of choppy.

I think my enjoyment for writing poetry kind of got in the way of this assignment. I think poetry can be cheesy and get away with it..but not songs. haha. I think I prefer the structure of a poem.

Overall, It was freeing to write this but I found it very difficult to figure out a topic. This idea of the Unknown kind of came to me because our class is all about discovering and questioning the unknown...and plus life is kind of filled with unknowns with me at this point in my life.

  1. Yah, songwriting is really hard. I think that it is much easier if you go at it with a partner, that way you can check each other.
