La la la (McKenna)

Okay, so I learned that I'm not a very good songwriter.

I actually tried writing a lot of different songs, in a lot of different styles, and they were all pretty bad.  I originally wanted to avoid angsty, too.... but that didn't happen.  My attempts at humorous songs were flat-out cheesy, so kudos to Flight of the Conchords for making it look deceptively easy.

So I settled on this song, the first I wrote.  I tried to write a song from the perspective of the princess in the tower- she's locked away, physically and emotionally and needs someone to save her.  (Okay, so this song is really cheesy, too.  I might just be a big block of sharp cheddar.  Or Monterey Jack.  Or Brie... yum.  Sue me.)

Also, I learned that writing an actual melody is killer hard (for me).  I tried.  And failed.  So you just get lyrics.  But I think I'll try again at some point because that is something I would really like to accomplish.

Here goes nothing:

Who Am I?

I hide my heart so you can't see.
It's mine to protect and be lonely.
I sometimes wish that I could let you in
But that would require me to be trusting.
I can't.
That's more than I can be.

Behind this mask lies a girl
Who secretly wants you to be her world.
It won't be easy.  It'll be really hard.
But if you push on through, you'll win my love
I know.
And we'll be so happy.

(Chorus:)
So fight through the thorns and jump the moat.
Scale the wall.  Please, please don't choke.
Unlock the door to the tower.
You'll have to wake me with your power.

Please kiss me even though I'm really scared.
Because you fought your way in, you deserve to be here.
We'll make this work.  We're together now.
I only know why, I'm not sure how.
But know.
That I love you.

(Chorus:)
So push through the thorns and jump the moat.
Scale the wall.  Please, please don't choke.
Unlock the door to the tower.
You'll have to wake me with your power.

I know this isn't a fairy tale.
Even though it's a story of boy meets girl.
Love isn't easy.  It's really hard.
But worth it because you'll have my heart.
Please know.
That I love you.

Forever I'll be true.

I love you.

(The End)

  1. I agree! Writing a song was very difficult and especially making a funny one was ridiculously hard. Mine all came out cheesy...even my non humorous attempts. go Flight of the Conchords!
