La la la (McKenna)

Okay, so I learned that I'm not a very good songwriter.

I actually tried writing a lot of different songs, in a lot of different styles, and they were all pretty bad.  I originally wanted to avoid angsty, too.... but that didn't happen.  My attempts at humorous songs were flat-out cheesy, so kudos to Flight of the Conchords for making it look deceptively easy.

So I settled on this song, the first I wrote.  I tried to write a song from the perspective of the princess in the tower- she's locked away, physically and emotionally and needs someone to save her.  (Okay, so this song is really cheesy, too.  I might just be a big block of sharp cheddar.  Or Monterey Jack.  Or Brie... yum.  Sue me.)

Also, I learned that writing an actual melody is killer hard (for me).  I tried.  And failed.  So you just get lyrics.  But I think I'll try again at some point because that is something I would really like to accomplish.

Here goes nothing:

Who Am I?

I hide my heart so you can't see.
It's mine to protect and be lonely.
I sometimes wish that I could let you in
But that would require me to be trusting.
I can't.
That's more than I can be.

Behind this mask lies a girl
Who secretly wants you to be her world.
It won't be easy.  It'll be really hard.
But if you push on through, you'll win my love
I know.
And we'll be so happy.

(Chorus:)
So fight through the thorns and jump the moat.
Scale the wall.  Please, please don't choke.
Unlock the door to the tower.
You'll have to wake me with your power.

Please kiss me even though I'm really scared.
Because you fought your way in, you deserve to be here.
We'll make this work.  We're together now.
I only know why, I'm not sure how.
But know.
That I love you.

(Chorus:)
So push through the thorns and jump the moat.
Scale the wall.  Please, please don't choke.
Unlock the door to the tower.
You'll have to wake me with your power.

I know this isn't a fairy tale.
Even though it's a story of boy meets girl.
Love isn't easy.  It's really hard.
But worth it because you'll have my heart.
Please know.
That I love you.

Forever I'll be true.

I love you.

Provo Dream
(Set to the music of Katy Perry's Teenage Dream)

You think I'm pretty
With my modest clothing on
You think I'm funny
When I go to the Branbury Salon
I know you get me
So I'll let my walls come down, down

Before you met me
I was alright,
But things were kinda heavy
You brought me to life
Now this February
We'll get married in no time, nooo time.

Let's go to Squaw Peak tonight
No regrets, just love.
We can eat froyo til we die
You and I
We'll be Cougs forever

You make me

Feel like I'm living the Provo Dream
The way you ride that scooter.
I can't stop
Baking for you.
But don't eat it all,
Don't eat it all.

My heart stopped
When you proposed to me.
Just one month.
Now baby I believe
This is real
So take a chance
We're getting married

Real soon, like real soon.

We drove to Springville
And visited Cracker Barrell
It was delicious, and
you bought BYU apparel.
I'm glad I found you
My spirituality will increase,

I'm complete

Let's go to Squaw Peak tonight
No regrets, just love.
We can eat froyo until we die
You and I
We'll be Cougs forever

You make me

Feel like I'm living the Provo Dream
The way you ride that scooter.
I can't stop
Baking for you.
But don't eat it all,
Don't eat it all.

My heart stopped
When you proposed to me.
Just one month.
Now baby I believe
This is real
So take a chance
We're getting married
Real soon, like real soon.

Writing songs is really really difficult. If we are being honest, it was much easier for me to play off of someone else's already written music. It is really hard to write "poetry" in this meter, especially if you are trying to go to the beat of someone else's song. The themes in this song are not necessarily how I feel on a day to day basis...(obviously it is sarcastic), but i mean, sometimes BYU holds true to the stereotypes we associate with it. I also am pretty sure I could get kicked out of BYU for mine, so if we could not show it around that would be great. :]

Sittin On The Couch (lyrics by Cameron Pinegar)

People love to walk around
And engage in lots of fun

I just like to sit around
You may call me lazy bum

People like to go to town
Buy from all the stores

I just log onto ebay
So my feet don't get no sores

You may call me a lazy bum
B-U-M bum bum
I'm just doing my own thing
0-1-0-0-0-1
That's Binary Code for "Don't Judge Me"
I'm happy on the couch
I don't bug no one, Here in my den
I get by just being a slouch

People play all kinds of sports
Horse shoes, tennis, golf

I just play fantasy league
Against a German guy named Rolph

People love to leave their house
Breathe in some fresh air

I don't care for sunlight much
And I prefer  my underwear

You may call me a lazy bum
B-U-M bum bum
I'm just doing my own thing
0-1-0-0-0-1

That's Binary Code for "Don't Judge Me"
I'm happy on the couch
I don't bug no one, Here in my den
I resemble Oscar the Grouch

This song is a reflection about how I felt during the time I wrote it. I had been sitting on my butt for about six hours, working on homework and mainly getting distracted by random things online. When I realized how pathetic I was I wrote a song about how pathetic I was, but I wrote it from the perspective of trying to defend how my pathetic actions are not pathetic because it's who I am... does that make sense? I learned that it's easier to write songs if you write about what you're feeling because I tried to write songs before this and they sucked. (I'm not saying this doesn't suck, but on a relative scale of suck they sucked worse than this.) I also learned that songs don't have rules and depending on what music I put this too it could be a hit or a bomb. Sometimes lyrics aren't that important to the song's value.

I wrote my song in welsh. hopefully it could be sung to some really hardcore dance techno. I call it Mwnci Drwg - meaning naughty monkey.

I LEARNED: Songs are fun to write. Songs are hard to write in other languages. Songs are REALLY hard to rhyme in other languages, especially when you don't speak it super well. But hey, I wanted to challenge myself. Plus there aren't too many welsh songs besides weird folk music, so here is a start for the near dying language.
The creative juices i used were- trying to turn a real experience into lyrics that i could translate and sound somewhat clever. My brain hurts.

Rut 5 - Robert George

Lyrics to be sung to "Party in the USA" by Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana

I hopped out my car at BYU with a degree from Orem.
Welcome to the land of Zoobie bliss, fetch, am I gonna fit in?
Sat in my desk, here I am for the first time
Look to my right and I see the Apostolic line

This is all so crazy, everybody gettin' all married
Checkin' fingers and I'm feelin' kinda lovesick
Too much pressure and I'm nervous
That's when Mr. Cutri turned on the radio

And a conference talk was on
And a conference talk was on
And a conference talk was on

So I put my hand up, nobody's opposed
Relief Society all the way
Eatin' the jell-o like "yeah!"
Prayin' befo' class like "yeah!"

Got my hands up, nobody's opposed
"Climbing the Y is great"
Yeah! There's a party in the MOA
Yeah! There's a party in the MOA

Get to the church in my khaki slacks
Everybody lookin' at me now
Like "Who's that dude with the 5 o'clock"
His temple recommend's expired by now

So hard with all this righteousness around me
It's definitely not a UVU party
Cause I see all are proposals
I guess I never got the memo

Testimony's shakin' and I'm feelin' kinda homesick
Too many Zoobies and I'm nervous
That's when the bishop turned on KBYU

And a devotional was on
And a devotional was on
And a devotional was on

So I put my hand up, nobody's opposed
Relief Society all the way
Eatin' some jell-o like "yeah!"
Prayin' befo' class like "yeah!"

Got my hands up, nobody's opposed
"Climbing the Y is great"
Yeah! There's a party in the MOA
Yeah! There's a party in the MOA

(It would probably go into a hardcore gangster rap section or a drug/caffeine influenced psychidelic bridge with lots and lots of profanity, but I'll save that for later)

The creative muscle that I used most was probably my deltoids, they are pretty sore right now. Also, my rhyming muscle hurts like way bad right now because I just made so many words rhyme.

This new campaign is brilliant. Check it out and be a part of it by creating a profile and doing some missionary work. It's really a great idea. What are your thoughts about the strategy behind this?
