Suburbia.

I thought the "Suburbia" exhibit was great! I saw it as a clever commentary on the "American Dream." It was as though each picture had a piece of what can be considered the American Dream. Like the dude who was so proud that he would BBQ in his backyard, or the family that was pumped to plant their own lawn. There was also the muscle car and the RV (complete with the family dressed up in their "Campers of America" uniforms.) Several parts of the exhibit made me laugh, like the picture of the drunk dance party, and the lady with the huge curlers in her hair. But some of it was kind of depressing, like the man who went to all the effort to install a huge pool, but now no one in the family wants to take care of it, and the Chinese family that can never enjoy their native food because there's nothing at the grocery store except hot dogs.

Made me want to go through my own families pictures and add clever captions.

  1. Totally agree about the captions.

Some of them made my day, others gave a more solemn feeling. For example, "We've been married for two months and everything we own is in this room." It made me really appreciate all that I have.

  2. i second on the captions. maybe that would be a cool project/ad assignment. its funny how a few words and some correlated feelings can really have an effect.

  3. I loved how the captions added a whole other element to the exhibit. I'm so glad you commented on it!

  4. The family of campers was like a teenagers worst nightmare! It was so funny, but i felt bad for the kids! I went from laughing to being a bit solemn as i went from piece to piece as well.
