Finding #5: Emily Jacobsen: Clever Branding

I created a bulletin board collection of inspirational creative logos, names, and branding. I can't wait till my illustrator skills are fully developed and I can start creating all of the ideas I have stuck in my head! I love trying to come up with new names and branding strategies for existing companies. I'd love to work someplace like Eat My Words. I collected a whole bunch, but these are a few of my favorites:
Snooty Peacock Jewelry Boutique, Ryan Russell, Ryan Russell Design

Home Pregnancy Test, named by Eat My Words
Newscreen Energy, by András Sántha, Ecoart

Quickcook Delivery, by András Sántha

Dish the Dirt Public Relations, by Meagan Ryan, freelance

Finding Stuff #5 --Marie Lewis

I wandered across this little treasure a few days ago:

Finding Stuff 5 Nicole Loumeau

This guy (I'm assuming it's a guy from the monk-esque member picture) took his camera into his russian friend (who he describes as the Frankenstein of cameras). "Frankenstein" found an old camera from 1908 and was able to take that lense and put it on this guy's digital camera. The pictures are so cool! What an original idea. Taking two things, an old lens and a new camera, and combining them. So the pictures, which are straight jpeg from the camera, look as if they were taken a hundred years ago, but with modern day settings.

I think graffiti is pretty cool to look at when it isn't just someones name or a gang name. In many ways graffiti could be considered art, and in many ways graffiti is just plain annoying, unoriginal, and destructive to property. In this case I think it would be considered art. I just hope it wasn't done in a spot where it was unwanted. Check it out...

Speaking of typography... this is one of the coolest things i have ever seen in my life. Introducing Thomas Broome.

Here's a really interesting video about advertising I found on TED Talks. It's pretty insightful and funny. The guy, Rory, is a VP at Ogilvy.

Finding Stuff 5- Elise Meservy "Banned Ad"

If you haven't already seen this ad then you are missing out. This Xbox 360 ad was banned, yet I think it has still done a lot of good for Xbox because it want viral.

For someone who doesn't usually play video games, after watching this ad, I really want to. It shows Xbox games and its newer, more improved controls (at that time) in a new way.

I really think this ad is brilliant. I love it and I kind of want to play that game with some people sometime.

Rainbow Connection (McKenna)

I'm sure a lot of you have already seen these gorgeous commercials for Sony Bravia, but I thought I should share them here anyways:

These commercials contain such a simple concept (show color) but they are so visually stunning.  Also, the makers of these commercials went to great lengths to do these without special effects, thus truly making them "like no other."

Rut #4: Emily Jacobsen: Indian Palace

I have never had Indian food before so I decided to go to Indian Palace on Center Street in Provo.( I see it every time I go to Sammy's for pie shakes but have never been.) I'm just gonna say it... I think I hate indian food! I loved the host/owner guy and the whole feel of the restaurant, but curry-type chicken is definitely not making my list of faves. I guess that's not entirely true, the guy did recommend a strawberry something drink which I liked, and I liked the flatbread and the rice pudding (although its not as good as tapioca.) But the tortilla chip whatever it was, and the piece of food at the front of the plate I did not like. After stirring the food around on my plate for a while, I got hungry enough I did eat parts of the chicken chunks... so I guess I wouldn't DIE if I was stranded in India... but I might just have to survive on rice pudding.

Rut 4 Nicole Loumeau

I also went to Bombay House. I have some friends from India here in Provo. I have had them cook me food before- but it is always so spicy I end up crying more than eating. So this week they took me to Bombay House. It was the first time I have had restaurant Indian food. I ordered the Mattar Tofu (tofu cooked with green peas, onions, garlic, ginger, tomatoes, and spices) with garlic naan (garlic bread) and a mango soy shake. It was all so good. And this time, of course, I ordered it not spicy at all. So, for the first time, I actually enjoyed Indian food!

Tyler Nelson - Bombay House

I went to Bombay House. I have never had Indian food before. It was a fun experience. I really liked the look of the whole restaurant. I asked my brother his opinion on what to order because anything on the menu would have been a first for me. I ended up ordering the Lamb Boti Kabob Masala
- boneless lamb barbecued in tandoor oven, then cooked with, onions, garlic, ginger, tomatoes, cream, and spices.

It was good. At first the smell of it along with the look of it threw me off. I will admit that I was nervous to try it. It was hard to try something that I hadn't eaten. I was glad that I did though because it ended up being pretty good. By the end of the meal I was using my Garlic Naan as a spoon to eat the rest of it. This was a great assignment. You never know what will happen when you try new things. If you haven't tried Bombay house go give it a try!

Last night i headed over to Great China. I glanced at the menu and picked something I had never heard of before. I believe it was called Moo Goo Gai Pan. It wasn't weird food like I had hoped, but delicious nonetheless.
It was really liberating to pick something off the menu in one second flat. Normally at restaurants I spend way to much time stressing between options trying to figure out what it is I really want. Blind ordering may be my new thing. What this says about me is that I've found one more thing in life to not worry so much about. Just get something new, you may love it!

After going through the list of things i've yet to eat, my husband reminded me that I have never eaten a hot dog--and Jdawgs was theee place to have my first hot dog. It seems crazy that i have never eaten a hot dog before, but my mother refused to have them in her home and i guess the idea stuck with me after i left. Also, i was incredibly scared of hot dogs because of how they looked and smelled and everything else. Anyways, i took the plunge and ate my very first hot dog. To my surprise it wasn't as bad as i was expecting (i did take my first bite while plugging my nose). I couldn't eat the whole thing, but i did take a leap and try it! I'm not sure if i would have one again, but i do feel more like a true cougar, having ate at Jdawgs!

I went to Happy Sumo to  try some new kinds of sushi. I usually get a sushi roll; the most Americanized one I can find.... but this time I went for the freshest of the fresh and the rawest of the raw. I'm not big on seafood, but I'm starting to like it more and more. Sushi has been the hardest seafood to accept because it's not cooked. I ordered hamatchi, escolar, salmon, and tuna. They all tasted great when soaked in soy sauce and wasabi, however the texture is still going to take some getting-used-to. Overall it was a good experience; I'm proud that I finally manned up and tried the real stuff.

Raw hide.

Here goes nothing.

Rut#4-New Food-Laura Coalwell

I tried several different foods over the past few days:
-sweet potato fries at Guru's (I tried a bite of one a while ago and wasn't that impressed, but this time they were surprisingly really good, especially with the dipping sauce).

-the Maui Wowie chicken wrap I got with my fries

but I was most excited about...
-Southwestern Mac n Cheese from Schnipper's in New York City!

Mainly because it was in New York City, but also because it was really good! It had roasted poblanos (little green peppers) in it and I had to ask the server what those were.

It was a little spicy, but also kind of sweet and really cheesy.
Mac n Cheese is definitely a favorite of mine, so it's fun to try other varieties.

I love trying new food, especially in new places.

I'm planning on trying lots of other new foods this week while I'm here!

Rut 4 - Japanese Fried Veggies (Scott)

I went to the Japanese restaurant Yamato in Orem. While a little shabby on the outside, the inside of the restaurant was great. Plus the cool part was the the booths were built so that you can sit cross-legged and pretend like you are actually in Japan eating Japanese food. Alas, the space under the table was not big enough for me to sit in such way so I had to just sit the regular way.
I ordered Tempura, which I had never heard of or eaten. It consisted of a variety of fried vegetables. It was pretty good, especially with the special sauce stuff that came with it. Surprisingly it was pretty dang close to regular southern fried vegetables. I thought it would be really good with BBQ sauce instead. Maybe some fried catfish, hush-puppies and slaw, but that's for another time...

Anyhow. Even as I was looking at the menu I was so tempted to fall back into my old routine and get orange chicken or perhaps some BBQ. Maybe just some sushi. But no, I turned my back on those old Panda Express-esque ways and got something new.

Rut 4 - Elise Meservy- An El Salvadorian Experience

After at some point in my life being tricked or dared into eating octopus sushi, squid jerky, part of a fertile duck egg, and a habanero pepper, I realized i preferred the latter to all previous. So, for this new food adventure I decided to try some more Latino food (because i LOVE it).

So, I went here:

El Salvador Restaurant, located on center street.

Where I coincidentally ran into some old friends whom I never would have seen.
They helped me pick out:

(bean and cheese pupusas)

which I accompanied with this:

As strange as this sounds, I have never had a Jarritos before. I am not the biggest soda drinker (and actually I felt a little sick after drinking this even though it was tasty).

The Pupusas were delicious but I think I prefer just a plain Bean and Cheese Burrito from Robertos (a Las Vegas/Cali Mexican chain). I'm a tortilla fan all the way. I even make sure to go to the Tortilla Factory in California Adventures when I go, so I can get a free tortilla.

I'm glad I had this experience though because it was fun exploring and learning a little bit more about Central and South American food, people, and cultures.

Rut 4 - Robert George

We went to the Bombay House in Provo for my friends birthday. I had never had Indian food before and had never been intrigued by it. I am not a fan of spicy food. Not a fan of eating with my hands. I don't enjoy sweating whilst I eateth. Anywho, I ordered the Bollywood Chicken and must say that it was quite tasty. The rice and bread were definitely my favorite parts of the meal, the rice in particular was delish. I can't say that I'm going back anytime soon but I enjoyed the food there. Amen.

Rut #4- Kylie Cox

I ate Korean food at Orem's Korean Festival. Pretty much a various assortment of all kinds of Korean food. I learned that i still do not like meat with sauce, but i did not hate the noodles, or the rice, or anything spicy. I also learned that eating Korean food isn't really just eating, which irritated me at first, but then i really appreciated it. I'm so used to eating meals as fast as I can and getting on with whatever I was doing, but the Korean culture is the opposite. The food is a means of social networking. They provide food, they make you mingle, you eat, you stand in line together, you sit at a communal table, and you are there for like three hours. I actually really enjoyed it. For your viewing pleasure, i have attached BYU's taekwondo team's act. it was fab.

Rut 4

Chorizo con huevo: (n) basically, a really greasy sausagey meat scrambled in with some egg

I love Mexican, but I have never ordered this because I have heard that chorizo is like "the cheap man's meat" (see Spam if you live anywhere besides Hawaii). Anyway, it wasn't half bad but it wasn't all good either. No problems, but I would say that it wasn't as satisfying as say a torta or some flautas would be. Mostly, I learned that I should stay away from beans just as a rule.

Rut 4 - Hawk

I tried trout for the first time.

No, not the trout shown above; for two reasons...

A. That fish is a mutant.
B. The girl nor the fish are anyone I know personally. (thank you Google 'trout' search)

I hate seafood and fish. There, I said it. Its true - I would rather eat baby ducks than have to eat shellfish or anything else that carries it's home around on its back. They can't be trusted.

My sister is in town and she went fishing and caught a bunch of trout and brought them back and cooked them; realizing that this assignment was due this week I accepted the challenge of eating one.

Surprisingly enough it didn't taste fishy at all; but seeing as I never eat fish, apparently I don't know the tricks and secrets of eating them (like how to get all the bones out of the meat in one step) instead I looked more like a bear trying to claw the fish apart and ended up with fish bones in pretty much every bite. So that part, not as fun.

I learned that not all fish is disgusting; some actually taste like a slightly soggier version of chicken. I also learned that bones are overrated; I mean really, how many ribs does one fish need?!

"Food is an important part of a balanced diet." -Fran Lebowitz (McKenna)

I experienced deep-fried tofu.

What did I learn from this experience?  Fried tofu has a taste and consistency reminiscent of a sponge.  The dipping sauce was delicious.  Together, they weren't half bad.

What does the answer to the previous question say about me?  I'm willing to give new foods a chance.

Have I changed in any way?  I have less money in my wallet as a result of buying this.  (But that's okay! Life was meant to be lived, food was meant to be eaten, and money was meant to be spent :P)

Finding #5-Laura Coalwell--Shaytards

My friend Bob showed me this vlog the other day. The Shaytards post about their lives, their funny kids, and the most random stuff.

And they have a TON of followers.
It always boggles my mind how viral videos get so...well, viral. I know there is a strategy behind it, but the power of word of mouth is incredible.

It all really got started when "Shaycarl" decided to post one vlog each day for a year.

Anyway, it's just so interesting to me how the simplest ideas can become so widespread and well known.

Oh and they have a pretty sweet theme song.

Ping Pong Poster - Hawk Vance

Finding 4

This stuff is called conch salad. Conch is a shell fish that is common in the Florida keys and in the Bahamas. I took a cruise this summer and we ate tons of this stuff every time we reached a port. If you're looking for a new food to try this coming week this might be a great one.

Ping Pong (McKenna)

Ta-da.

This is the poster I truly wanted to make, with real (from the movie) and drawn (from the manga) elements in the comic page, but I unfortunately didn't have the skills to execute that :P

One day I will have a large collection of retro surfboards. Until then I just look at them online. This is one of my favorite shapers as far as style goes. I do own one of his boards yet but I have several that are very similar to his. I think he is very innovative and definitely an artist.

Google Chrome created this awesome interactive music video to Arcade Fire's song "We Used To Wait," and it features the house you grew up in! It works best on the Google Chrome browser but I played it on Safari and it works as well. Have fun!

I thought the theme of this movie was "do what makes you happy". It makes Peco happy to win, and it makes Smile happy to let Peco win. The japanese part of my poster says "i wish you happiness" in japanese. Well, according to Yahoo answers it does.

I thought for this post I would post two things for y'all.

1. The first one is helpful. You might already know about this, but this is a great place to download different fonts to your computer. The majority of them are free which is great when Photoshop or Word don't have the fonts you are looking for.  http://www.dafont.com/

2. The second, something to make you laugh. She has other videos you can check out on her web page - some are hit and miss, but some are hi-larious.  http://vimeo.com/11139998

Enjoy.

Finding #4: Emily Jacobsen: Pinterest

I just discovered Pinterest, a new social media site that is basically a virtual pin board! You collect photos of things you love from wherever you find them online, tag or "pin" them to your profile, and then categorize them. It is a genius idea. If you are anything like me and are constantly saving to your hardrive or sending emails to yourself, you're going to love this.

I was finally invited to join Pinterest yesterday so my profile is brand spanking new. Pinterest is still in beta mode, so if you like what you see, get on the waiting list to get an invite! The link to my page is at the bottom of this post.

Below is my profile home page where you can see each of my separate pin boards for different categories I felt like creating tonight.
Below is my board titled "NYC Apt" filled with pictures of ideas for decorating a small studio/apt.

Oh The Things You Can Do With Your Hands- Finding Stuff 4 -Elise Meservy

Hands are phenomenal. With them we can hold our cereal spoon, write a letter, play the piano, dry a tear, or help a friend up. Oppositely with hands we can also pick our noses, slap someone's cheek, or pull a trigger.

Here are some of the fantastically unique things people have come up with using our hands for:

and

What can you do with your hands? Or better yet, what will you do with your hands?

Findings #4: Things that shouldn't be found...

Itunes is fantastic. I love the fact that I can get any song, anytime and have it in the palm of my hand within minutes. However, with this new technology comes the death of album art we once had with albums and CD’s. My good friend Jeff Bridges is trying to save the exquisiteness of really bad album covers by including some of the worst album covers ever on his web site. Below are some pictures of these timeless gems- Summer Holm
